the title they are given is Valedictorian, when my Daughter graduated last year, the Valedictorian and Salutatorian were given medallions, special colored chords,a lapel pin,an additional seal on their diplomas,special recognition in the graduation program,and the Valedictorian was allowed to give a speech, and the #1 thing the top student gets is the Pride of knowing they did their very best in school !!!

Valedictorian would be the person with the top grades. There is also Magna *** Laude & Summa *** Laude, both are grading honors, but Valedictorian is the best.
