Most cemetries do one of three things...

1) Continue the purpetual care of the graves and inter no one else
2) create Columbariums (for ashes) and stack then
3) create Crypt's/Mosoleums and again stack them.

Most are just closed down and taken care of by either the city or church they are part of.

If they can't get more space in an adjacent lot, The cemetery is closed and the local government takes over maintenance, there are several cemeteries in my area that have been closed for decades.

I don't know if going out of business is the correct term - but if they can't expand, and if stacked graves are not an option - they do CLOSE. Some closed cemeteries are forgotten and become overgrown, others continue to be maintained.

Where I live, the surrounding land (here it is typically farm ground)is usually owned by a farmer and they have a contract with the cemetery to sell so many acres if such a thing should happen.

They have several options as to what to do
1 - expand, if the land is available.
2.- after contacting any surviving family members, of the oldest burial plots , they can actually remove whatever is left in older plots to make room for new occupants.
3. turn on the No VAcancy sign at the gate, and chuckle when people drive by and look really confused at the sign

They start stacking. You are allowed between 3 to 4 bodies to be stacked per plot. After that if all sections are full, than they start to purchase new ground.

Wow, that question has to be the most original one I've heard so far....

I think, they would start piling the corpse on top of each other. That's how it is my country. Our cemeteries have skyscrapers.

They dig all the bodies up, smash them into little pieces, then they sell it to Burger King, McDonalds, and StarBucks, for their secret ingredients (sans Soylent Green)
