Okay... So I'm the proud great-grandmother to a litter of adorable 8(ish) week old kittens... I broughtlittle Brynn out of the barn and home with me. Her left eye is all gunky. My fiancee said it was hay fever, but now that she's out of the hay, it's not going away (Although I haven't bathed her and she still smells like hay... we did wash her face though)...
Any ideas how to clean it up/get rid of it?
And is it really hay fever?

Just to add....
In her father's litter, one of those kittens had a gunky eye for a day and it went away on it's own...

Believe it or not its a respiratory infection. It needs to go to the vet and get on antibiotics. It will kill it and its very contagious to the other kittens. Wash the eye with a warm damp cloth and put triple antibiotic ointment on them. It will help it be able to open its eyes and see, but has to get some meds.
Good luck

Don't worry the "gunky eye" is a very common illness that happens to young kittens. Take a wash cloth with warm water on it and gently massage the eye until it is full or 3/4 open- then carefully wipe away the "gunk". Do this repeatedly every day and it will go away.

First try using a warm washcloth to wash the eye. If it contenues, take her temp. just like a baby. but if it is above 90, I would take her to the vet right away. It may be allergies, but there is a chance that it is more serious. Don't second guess yourself if you feel the need to take her before the 24hours is up. There are many conditions that could cause this. One of them is pink eye, and yes animals can carry it and respond badly to it's infection, a cold is usually the most common reson for gunky eye. Good luck and give kitty kisses for us.

'Gunky eyes' as you call them, are infected eyes. The virus from a cold may have affected her eyes. The virus could also be herpes which is a more persistent virus. Whichever it is, it is important to take the cat to a reputable vet immediately . If left untreated, the kitten can lose her eyesight. A kitten's eyes are very delicate and every minute counts.

You should go to the vet because it could either be an eye infection or an upper respiratory infection. I work in a vet and this is very common in cats which were barn cats. You should also have a stool sample done to check for parasite. They are very common in all kittens especially barn kittens because they mother eats mice they can pass tapeworm on to the kittens.

stress does it, I used antibiotic... like a vaseline type one from vet, applied directly to eyes
they said it was feline herpes cuz he was in the damn pound..... I hate those people for picking up my cat and taking it to a place where it would get a lifetime illness, just because its illegal for cats to be outside at all in Maryland... and this cat is too friendly so he got picked up (didnt know it was illegal until this happened)
when his stress went away so did the eye prblem and he hasnt had it since (over a year now)

Not hayfever.
my cat had the same thing.
I can't remember exactly what it's called, but it's like pink eye for kitties.
Take her to the vet. They'll give you an ointment to put in her eye, and it will clear it right up.
