I just can't bring myself to enjoy dining experiences where there is that "sneeze guard" over the food. I always feel like some big guy's chest hair or something is going to get in my macaroni. Is this a phobia? Can you help?

To answer your first question, "Yes, I have eaten at places that have a sneeze guard over the food." Do I do this often, as it today or tomorrow? Probably not, but it happens from time to time.

As for your concern, I don't see the point. Chest hair could easily get below the sneeze guard. That's why it's call a "sneeze guard" instead of a "chest hair guard."

Incidentally, being a cat, I am an unfortunate connoisseur of hairs. Chest hair is by far the least offensive hairs to consume, being shorter than head hair and still relatively relatively soft. The worst hair is actually beard hair, which can get very short and stiff. Having a goatee, I once got one of my own beard hairs stuck in between my teeth and gums! It is SO annoying. Other hairs you can just hack back up, but that little bugger annoyed me ALL day long and required tweezers to get out!! FEH!!!

That said, the "sneeze guard" is probably more effective in protecting you from beard hairs, given its positioning, so it should make you feel safer.

As for the chest hairs, hair doesn't carry disease well and is high in fiber and is probably better for you than a Little Debbie snack cake. Maybe there should be more in our food!

Anyhow, good luck with your phobia!

i agree with the first poster - the sneeze guard probably helps, if anything.

if you feel that strongly, then why eat at restaurants at all? there is always going to be some level of uncleanliness, just due to human error, even at the nicest places. :b I think the sneeze guard is the least of the problems.

I say, I still wanna go out, so I just pretend like my food prepared itself. what I don't know won't give me food poisoning (hopefully). seriously, we get germs every day from the air itself. life's too short to stress about stuff like that -- in fact, stressing about it will probably be what makes you get sick!

All salad bars have them. Yes, I eat at places like that. It is a good thing, without the guard who knows what may be in the food!

I think the sneeze guard is a good thing you wouldn't want boogers in your food would you?

well, i think it's grosser to NOT have the guard. then whatever people have on them just falls right into the food and you end up eating it! ewww.

and another point, i've never seen any hair or boogers on the sneezeguard ... it's not like they're dirty or anything ... so it's more hygienic that way. :)

I have and know for a fact that after they close this guard is cleaned for the next day.

I try not to think about it. I love the Chinese place down the street from us. the buffet is cheap and their egg drop soup kicks booty!
