Elane D hit the nail on the head, except the jetta is named after the jet stream and the golf is named after the gulf stream.

Jetta is a type of wind. Volkswagen named many of their vehicles in the earlier 80's after different winds per say. Just like the Scirocco - A hot or warm southerly wind. I forget what wind Jetta is and I know it's not an english term.

The word Jetta comes from the Latin word "Jettori" which in it's most basic translation means to "Jettison" as in to throw something out. And the Jetta diesel does, it throws out 60 times more Nitrous Oxide than the legal limit... They should have called it the "Polli" which comes from an old Greek word meaning "to pollute". Now you have the truth! Maybe?

I think it just means fast. And i think it doesn't mean anything. It's just a word Volkswagon made up.. Jetta, fast like a jet.
