Video footage of the collapse of the WTC towers on 9/11 show evidence of what appears to be massive explosions occuring in rapid sequence at and below the level of the airplane crash sites with dust clouds obscurring the buildings themselves and huge steal beams being expelled hrizontally from the building and well outside of the border of the dust clouds. Well below the level of the collapse, over 20 stories below, " squibs " or puffs of smoke can be seen blowing out of the windows of each of the Twin Towers as the fell symetrically into there footprint.

The initial shock of the jet crashing in to the building knocked the fire protective crud off the i-beams. Without this protection and with fire out of control where they crashed, the beams weakened and collapsed.
At one point the weight of the beams that fell down piled up and got to be so much that the beams below them could not take the weight. They collapsed and started a chain reaction. As these entire floors collapsed, a compression of the space in the office areas forced the air below. The force from the air went the only place that was available. It went down and out from the lower areas.
With the huge volume of air being compressed and forced out in such a short time, the force from the air became so strong that it caused squibs and later all sorts of debris including steal beams being shot horizontally out when there was a horizontal path for them to go.

I think it has to do with the fact that when the steel beem gave way which allowed the upper floors to fall ontop of the lower floors thus a huge amount of force might be sent to the center which would then send the steel beams outward, though i have never actually seen this happen, but its not like i took a good look at what exactly was happening, i will take your word for it and give you the most honest answer i have. The huge amount of weight above that area collapse the entire structure.
