I don't know where you live, but there are plenty of car auctions for reg people in Australia. You could also try eBay they have some good deals. There are a lot of sites on the web. you just need to find what is in your area.

Car auctions are good if you know what you are looking at. If you're a mechanic you have a leg up on it. If not, and you see something you like, you can have the dealer loan you the car long enough to have a mechanic give it a quick once-over to tell you what he thinks. There are open auctions where you don't have to be a dealer, but you gotta have the cash or a bank line of credit. There is no financing.

There ARE some auctions open to the public in large metro areas. It's best if you know how to spot signs of abuse. If you are not knowledgeable in this area, you should go to a reputable dealer and buy a "certified" used car. It will cost more, but it will save you money in the long run.

1st you take it to a shop and have checked out. If the seller will not let you thy have something to hide. And if thy say thy had it checked have it checked anyway by someone you trust.
You may have to spend some money but it will save you in the long run.And You do not go to an Auction thats where dealers dump there junk or cars that dont sell, some have rebuilt titles or no titles or are salvege cars. you can go to some auctions but you must know the ropes and what your looking for.
Hope I helped.

Buy from a private seller.
Dealers ALWAYS charge more than the car is worth (remember they are a business, and have to make a profit).
Try sites like craigslist.com, autotrader.com, Or mautofied.com (if you want a hooked up car)
But always remember to watch out for scams, if it seems too good to be true... it is.
Paying a mechanic $50 to look over a car you're planning on purchasing seems like a waste If he finds nothing wrong with it, but think about the headache you'll save if he finds something major that you can't afford to fix.
Good luck searching for your car.
