I had/have an ingrown toenail. I got most of it out myself (cant afford doc), the swelling is gone, a little redness is still there, and the tip corner is still tender. (I got it out yesterday). I have been soaking it in epsom warm saltwater, periodically putting peroxide on it, and putting antibitonic cream (neosporin) on it constantly.

The little bit of puss that was there in the beginning is not there anymore. I also can walk on it fine now, just when that tip corner gets hit it does hurt a lot.

The way I take care of it, getting a staph infection from it is very unlkely right?
I talk to my mother in law, which is an RN and she said to just keep soaking it and putting cream on it, and it should be fine.
What do you think?

If your mother-in-law is an RN, she is a much better source of information on this subject than people on here who you know nothing about.
(Lamisil is NOT for ingrown toenails, it's for fungus infection of the toenails)

The soaking should be fine, Your chances of staph infection are pretty slim, the podiatrist would probably do the same thing that you are doing, and give you an expensive prescription, I have never used a cream called LAMISAL, but I thought that it was used for ingrown toenails.
My sister had an ingrown nail, went to the Dr's, and there is where she ran into trouble, it seems that no one had sterilized the equipment after last patient, so going to the Dr's is not always the wisest thing to do.

Although, i would say it isnt very likely that you will get a staph infection they you are handlign it, it would still be cheaper to get the nail taken out and get the infection under control by a doctor than to treat a staph infection if you got one. Let alone the risks and sickness that come along with a bad infection like that.

You can get a staph infection anywhere but less likely in the leaner/bonier areas of your body. I would suggest keeping the toe clean and give it some air when you're not wearing shoes.

I have had the same problem, I have used baking soda. Take the soda and mix with warm water, and soak your toe. The baking soda takes out the swelling plus makes the skin around your toe soft so that you can remove the ingrown, then put your antibitonic cream on. Good luck.

Your mother in law is right, although at this point you can probably stop the soaks and just use the peroxide and antibiotic. at some point you might want to address the ingrown nail (when you can afford it)

As long as you do not have a weak immune system, you should be okay.
