I just hope someday that we don't owe everyone trillions.

We have become a society which values the self before all else. Self-gratification and its extreme, greed, have become a way of life in North America and the western world. Everyone wants to know, "What's in it for me?"
John F Kennedy, the great American president, once said, "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country." Anyone who said that today would be loudly laughed at by most people, unfortunately. The truth is that sacrificing for your country is what made America great in the beginning.
Unless we all change and return to the morals we once lived by, don't expect our leaders to be any different. They're human just like anyone else.

Because not enough of us are registered to vote.
Not enough registered voters actually vote.
The folks who do actually vote do not have the interest of the majority in mind when they vote. They have their own concerns, and their votes reflect what they think is best for themselves (which is as it should be, I'm not going to waste my vote on you if you can't be bothered to vote).
We still really only have two political parties.
Not enough people are interested in voting, because they don't feel that Republicans, or Democrats represent them, and they haven't bothered to research the candidates beyond what is shoved into our faces via campaign advertising. The rest of the candidates are largely unheard of because they don't have the resources to gather enough money to buy the same kind of popularity that Republicans, or Democrats can.
The two popular parties will continue to represent those persons who will actually vote, and will continue not to bother trying to include the concerns of those who can't be bothered to vote in their political agenda.
Next time you hear somebody say that they won't vote, because it doesn't make a difference, your blood should boil.
Hope you're a registered voter, who votes.

My favorite answer is that we no longer exist as a democracy, but rather a kleptocracy... our policiticians do no care of the outcome, they only seek to take the power for the sake of taking the power (think in terms of kleptomaniacs)

Until you show your unhapiness and disgust by not voting the corrupt trend will continue. Let the vermin in government know that 99% of us hate them nd they will change or know we will change them.
