Sit ups. Longer range of motion and more muscles are called into action with a sit up than a crunch.

My doctor told me once that crunches really don't do much for your abdominal muscles. She said your abdominal muscles are about the size of your pinky finger so doing crunches--or even situps for that matter--are like exercising by bending your pinky 50 times. Not sure how right that is, but I figured she must know what she's talking about if she's a doctor.

Crunches are better- they isolate the abs and they don't hurt your back like situps.

get a balance ball, they are great for crunches and all kinds of ab work.
