If you are going down to San Diego, you should definitely go to the zoo. It is one of the best in the country. And Disneyland is also a must, especially if you have kids. The kids might enjoy Legoland, which is up on the north side of San Diego. Hollywood is kind of overrated. It's fun to see Gauman's Chinese Theater but there's not much else and it isn't the best area. If you're going to a bunch of sights, Disneyland, Sea World, etc. sometimes you can get a pass that includes several for less than it would be to purchase each place separately. There's also Knott's Berry Farm and Magic Mountain. The promenade in Santa Monica is also fun.

A car is a must in the LA area. The area is too spread out to walk, and the bus system is very poor. I would also not recommend staying in the downtown or LA proper. Check tripadvisor.com for suggested good hotels.

Skip Los Angeles... come south to The Orange County area and see Disneyland and the surfers in Huntington Beach!! (laugh.. just kidding).

If you have to stay in LA, there's Universal Studios, and you can even try being in the audience in a TV or Game show by checking "audiences unlimited".. Some have age restrictions.

The Chinese Theater in Hollywood Blvd has the famous hand prints, and if you're in town for a movie premiere, check out the celebrities walking down the red carpet.

LA has historical places to visit and ethnic places like China town and Olvera (little Mexico) Street. You can also go and see the expensive shops on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills or the famous Farmer's Market near the CBS studios.

LA has also the Dodgers baseball team and in Orange County the Angels. Check their schedule for baseball games.

Going south of Los Angeles about 40 minutes, you have Orange County, home to Disneyland, Angels baseball, Knotts Berry Farm (the oldest theme park in the West!), and the OC part of the TV show...Newport Beach, and the "real" OC on MTV, Laguna Beach.
You can take a harbor cruise on the Balboa area, and get real close to the Sea Otters.

Going 1/2 hour south of the OC is Carlsbad, home to Legoland and some nice outlets... and 1/2 hour south of that is San Diego, home to Sea World and the San Diego Wild Animal Park.

15 minutes from San Diego is Mexico.. where you can take a day trip across the border to Tijuana.

If you go to Mexico, bring your ID. Soon, they'll ask for passport, but right now the ID is still valid. When you drive down, park across in the US Border - cost about $10 for 6-8 hours, walk over and then take a taxi to Revolucion (Revolution). The taxi costs about $6 US. Or, its about a 1/2 hour walk. Revolucion is the touristy part of Tijuana, so you don't have to worry about not speaking spanish... 80% of the people speak English and they accept US dollars too.

There's some of the "must see" that I would suggest to someone visiting So Cal

Try some museums in the LA area. Like science or history. How about the Long Beach aquarium and maybe a Dodger or Angel game.

Disneyland!!!! Especially since you have children. The Disneyland Resort is an absolute must see for anyone visiting Southern California! I also recommend Knotts Berry Farm - another great place for families to have fun together.

Go to Disneyland! It's the happiest place on earth. My friends and I, who are 14, went there earlier this month and had a great time. It's hard to get annoyed with disneyland.
