I have a Jack Russel Terrier and he doesn't really like to listen. He's really cool and all but he doesn't like to come when i call him. He likes you to chase him. He takes things he knows he's not supposed to have just so i can chase him around. Also when he gets out the door he runs away. What can i do to stop this?

My dad had a Jack Russell too. I think you need to take your dog to some obedience training. But if you have your dog off leash everytime you let him outside, just expect him to run off because they like to go find mice and moles and dig holes to find them. They'll kill any little thing they can catch. That's they're job.

I believe they were bred to raid fox holes or something of that nature.

Anyhow, to get the respect from your dog that you desire, you're going to have to keep him on leash and correct him everytime he does bad and praise him everytime he does good. You can even get a long nylon leash so he can go out pretty far from you but you still have control and can reel him in if necessary.

See my training blog at http://petchronicles.blogspot.com and feel free to email me from there anytime with training questions.

Taking him to an obedience class would be a good start. Terriers can be difficult to train sometimes, so having a trainer to help would be good for you and him. When he starts to make you chase him, don't buy into it, because it reinforces the behavior as play. He'll think you're just having a fun time, and so he'll continue to repeat the behavior. As far as getting out the door, make it hard for him to run away. When you're inside with him and you're getting ready to go outside, you can crate him, or make sure he is leashed. If he waits by the door when you're coming in, keep treats in your pocket and make him sit as soon as you open the door. Good luck!

It is natural for dogs to eat small amounts throughout the day, there is nothing wrong with not feeding them all at once.

With this in mind, this approach will take alot of your time.

Instead of giving your Jack breakfast, put the food in a treat bag (hooks on your belt) and feed him a few bits at a time troughout the morning as he hangs around you.

If he runs off, crouch down to his level, hold out some food and call him. At first always give him food, then start alternating randomly between "food and affection" and "just affection."

Jacks are extremely stubborn, so be patient & persistent.

I highly recommend the book, 'Culture Clash' by Jean Donaldson.

Jack Russels are EXTREMELY Intelligent.

STOP PLAYING THE CHASE GAME... he takes these things on purpose to engage you in "play" if you stop chasing him, it will not be fun for him and he will not do it anymore.

He needs Mental stimulation - for sure Obedience lessons will help, not just by making him more obedient but by stimulating his mind.. this is a MUST for any intelligent breed.
You need to have time for interaction with your dog, keeping his mind active - give him a purpose in life - maybe agility lessons later after Obedience?
These are not dogs for people who have little time to spend focused on their dog

You have to "take him down". It is a show of dominance. Abruptly, put him on his back, straddle him, take him by the scruff and make him look you in the eye. Tell him in a FIRM voice that you are the boss. Do this until he looks away. As soon as he looks away, you have won. Get up immediately and forget about it. Your dog should do what you say for his own safety. Never tell him more than twice, if it comes to a third time, "take him down". It is what wolf packs do for a show of dominance. You MUST be the dominate one, for your dogs happiness and safety.

Some breeds are just more playful and aggressive then others- Depending on how old your dog is there are different ways to train him. If he is young make sure you call his name strong and clear so he knows the meaning of it.

Next tackle sit- there are many different ways to do this, once again make sure your order is clear so he knows the meaning. You may have to gently push his rump to the ground after you call sit, you can stop doing this when he can do it on his own.

All animals are playful and they need room to play and let loose all their energy- It's best to schedule a time where you can play and excersise with your dog.

Hope this Helps!

Try to ignore him when he does bad stuff. Also, do some training with him. Give him a treat every time he follows an order...when you do both the ignoring and rewarding process consequently for awhile Jack will be less territorial towards you and a good puppy

Speak to him in frequencies above the range of the human ear. Or, if you can't manage that, stop chasing him - coz that's what he wants you to do - roll up a newspaper and bop him on the nose - coz he doesn't want you to do that. It will become a kind of test of intelligence, to see which of you gets the message first.

Talk to him in a soft childish voice. Dogs like that attention. And when he does listen to you give him a treat and tell him he's a good boy/girl. Maybe you can sign up for doggie classes at Petco.

First of all my dog is like this too. It's all about ATTENTION!
Me, Me Me!
A dog knows you're going to chase him and yell and whatever. They like it! It's like "When I do this, I get that"!
They know you'll "play" if they do that. If you ignore them and don't let them feel; like you're playing, the behavior will change.
