Well, start with colors – I would do bright, sunset colors (like reds, pinks, yellows, and oranges) or bright greens and blues, like tropical foliage and skies. Orchids would be great for some of the flowers, because they come in such a range of hues, and a few of them in a bouquet or centerpiece make a nice statement. If you can find them, hibiscus trees would be cool to have at the reception – put a few in the corners of the room or right in front of the entrance. When you think of tropical locations, you think of lots of plants, so use a lot of greenery in the decorations – this can help save money in some cases. Try to use big things – big leaves (banana leaves, palm fronds), big flowers (hibiscus, protea), etc. You may be able to put small centerpieces in coconut shells. Use seashells, too. My wedding wasn’t a tropical theme, but it was a beach theme, and for the centerpieces we borrowed some big hurricane lamp style things and put some sand, a pillar candle, and shells, starfish, and sand dollars in them, then put tealights on the table, too. You could also do something with floating candles and/or flowers. If there’s a buffet or a drink table or something like that, place tropical fruits all around the table – pineapples, mango, kiwi, papaya, etc. Big paper lanterns in the right colors, or little ones on a string of lights, can look cool. Have seashells (made of fondant) on the cake. A tropical theme is pretty versatile, because it can easily be made more formal or more casual. Hope this helped!

I agree about the Hawaiian theme however, I'd disregard rainbow colors. I'd consider a normal color choice (most likely a lighter colors though, yellows and oranges would look nice in September) but you could disregard the month and choose a color she likes. I'd simply opt for real flowers and wear real flowers also. Use sea-dollars and seashells. If she's looking for something less beachy and more jungle, I'd use lots of greens, many different types of greenery (which work for the beach theme) and again, choose a few colors that would be more elegant, than too many different colors.

Instead of that whole tropical lei thing (sooooooooooooo overdone!) do a beach house theme! Light colors, white, adirondack chairs, linen drapes. You could really make it work! For flowers you could do blue hydrangeas or orchids. Something delicate and light, you could work it out with the florist. Oh yeah, I'm totally seeing it in my head. I wanted to do it for mine, but I refuse to get my dress dirty on the beach. I had a lot of good ideas, so if you need anything you can e-mail me at daisy54172@yahoo.com I can also e-mail you some links of some nice beach houses that I was going to use for inspiration.

Hand everyone leis as they take their seats. Put fruit on tables as center pieces. Use wicker place mats, staple grass skirts to the seats of chairs. as guests enter have large 10 foot inflatable palm trees with colored lights spiraling down them transfer them to the reception area. Have a BBQ pit, or large fire pit (if out side) Have all staff wear tropical outfits. Put an umbrella or fun straw in all the glasses at reception.
Go on www.oriental tradingcompany.com or www.fun express.com for large quantity of themed items.
Hope I've helped,

for the tables for decoration you can get a piece of a glass mirror then ontop of that sprinkle some sand on there and put seashells around it and get a circled vase and make the water blue and place some fish in there and that would look cute.
get lil umberllas and place those around the sand too. that was what i was going to do if i had the summer wedding but i went ahead and had a Christmas wedding and it was just soo beautiful.. but with what she wants to do it will be pretty.. tell her congrats and good luck..
