You can't obviously.

You can get down some basic polite phrases and I highly recommend doing so. People will appreciate your polite attempts and then speak to you in English.

I don't know that this is really possible. However, I actually tried by going to Berlitz every day for 2 weeks before my first trip to France. What I found when I got to Paris is that I was able to ask a few key questions but not understand the responses. Seldom were the responses exactly "by the book" and I would get lost immediately. Still, I recommend doing this if you can, it was enjoyable and did give me a good start. Note that Berlitz is very expensive. If I were to do it again I would try to find an equivalent alternative.

Practice. Get the basics down, though. Greetings, questions, stuff you are likely to say as you're out and about. But if you are going to Paris... many people speak English there, and in my experience, some people would rather you spoke English than broken French anyway,

Take a Berlitz total immersion course, though it's not encouraged if you're an absolute beginner. It's not cheap, either.

If you don't know any French, maybe you could try one of those CDrom courses.

Not unless you have some familiarity with a romance language (Spanish, Latin, Italian) already. Pronunciation is key. Go tot he library and get a bunch of travel books and language tapes and immerse yourself. you may be able to get by, but I wish you a lot of luck.
