The term Holy Spirit, comes from the Western Orthodox tradition and Latin. The term Holy Ghost comes from the King James version.

Look at Acts 2:4 in English, Greek, and Latin

They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (King James)

kai eplêsthêsan pantes PNEUMATOS HAGIOU, kai êrxanto lalein heterais glôssais kathôs to pneuma edidou apophthengesthai autois.

et repleti sunt omnes SPIRITU SANCTU et coeperunt loqui aliis linguis prout Spiritus Sanctus dabat eloqui illis.

Pneumatos and Spiritus both mean spirit, ghost, breath, or breeze. It was pretty obvious why Jerome chose Spiritus for Pneumatos when he did his translation, but he could have chosen Sancta Anima.

Today's meaning of Spirit and Ghost do not capture what the Greek and Latin words mean. There are other words that would mean a spectre you could see, but these were not used. Spiritus and Pneumatos mean a presence that is not seen but heard and felt.
