There really is no set time limit - Ive seen cars burn for 10 or 15 mins without and explosion. And typically different things will explode from the car before the gas tank. Older cars with shock absorbent bumpers will blow first - tires - radiator caps.... the gas tank usually has a one way seal to prevent flames from coming into direct contact with the fuel.
But, if it does explode - I would suggest being as far away as possible. Its not the fire you going to have be worried about - its the projectile. [ie. glass and metal]
If you can get 100 yards away - that would be a good start.

delusion Busters did an episode in this. 2009 season, episode a hundred thirty. that they had an particularly complicated time getting a gas tank to blow up. They even strapped one to the front of a vehicle and pushed it over a cliff. even although the vehicle hit rapidly on the gas tank, no longer something occurred. the only way they might get the gas tank to blow up became with C4 explosive and plastic milk jugs protecting the gas. gas tanks exploding in a crash are greater often than not Hollywood specific outcomes. do no longer take this as that they are in a position to on no account explode. in some circumstances a vehicle can seize hearth in a crash and the hearth can ultimately make its thank you to the gas tank.
