It depends on when you hit it. If your catching a volley and putting it up for a spiker, its a set. But you can hit a set shot with your fingertips and its called a tip or tap (depending on your coach). If you do it when the other team is vollying, its a block. So there are three meanings for it. Need to be more specific.

It depends on how, but we called it a "dink" when I played in College and Highschool, when you just try to get it over the blockers..
If it is off a block we called it a touch.
Of course a good set will be mostly or all from the fingertips as well.

It's called a set.If more than just your fingertips are used,it's called a carry. Then the play would be turned back to the other team.

I see most people have said setting but that hits your hand a little so I would say it is tipping the ball.

nothing. you don't "hit" with your fingertips.
hit means to "spike"
so you don't hit with your fingertips. you hit with ur full open hand
((HOPEFULLY!!))
but maybe ur talking about when the ball is passed ((bumped)) to you, you get under the ball and use ur fingertips to push the ball up for the hitter?? thats called a set.
