Sorry , but it does happen like that sometimes. The fetus was not connected properly or it formed improperly.
OR you had a build up of clots due to unshedded lining from other months. This will cause a late period because your body had to work harder to eliminate the old linings.
I think it is a blessing to NOT KNOW which is the cause.

A miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks and it is nature's way of ending a pregnancy that is not developing normally. The length of the pregnancy will effect the number and severity of miscarriage symptoms.
A miscarriage that takes place shortly after conception can occur as a slightly late, slightly heavy period. Symptoms can vary from person to person, but there are common ones that generally occur:
Bleeding. This can range from brownish spotting to heavy bleeding. It is important to note that many women experience spotting or bleeding during pregnancy and about 50% of the time, the pregnancy progresses normally.
Pain or cramping in the lower abdominal area. The pain could be on just one side, both sides, or in the middle. You may also experience pain in the genitals, lower back, thighs, or buttocks.
You may notice that pregnancy symptoms like nausea and breast tenderness have subsided or lessoned. Be aware that some women do not notice any change in these symptoms, while others do.
Some women say that didn't "feel right" just prior to their symptoms.
If you are pregnant and experiencing symptoms you should contact your health care provider. If any of the following symptoms occur you should go the Emergency Room immediately:
Heavy bleeding
Passing clots or something that looks like tissue (bring the tissue to the hospital in a clean container)
A fever higher than 100.4 degrees F
Dizziness or fainting
A history of tubal (or ectopic) pregnancy
Severe vomiting
Severe pain the abdomen or back
If you have any uncertainty about the need to contact your health care provider, call him or her immediately.
good luck

I had a miscarriage, after which a child no longer lengthy after, then one more miscarriage. Considering I used to be informed I'd certainly not get pregnant, I regarded that one a blessing. Two years later I pass pregnant once more, and we had a good time and concept we might certainly not get pregnant once more. Then #three used to be born 18 months after #two...WOW! Then #four used to be 15 months after #three, then 18 months later #five....we began pondering it used to be a few form of cosmic funny story! #6 used to be born 2 years after #five, and quantity seven (we name her seven of 7) used to be born 2 years after #6. My SIL additionally confronted a number of miscarriages, 4 or 5 I believe, she stopped telling us after a whilst. She bought pregnant approximately ten years in the past although, after which popped out FIVE in ten years. So we are each rather cheerful with our little advantages. I'm sorry on your loss, I have no idea what else to let you know besides to hold your hopes up. I certainly not concept I'd be so blessed, and I take into account the ones days of dread, each and every month of praying. We have been complete nuts for the period of our pregnancies, in particular in view that all of our miscarriages have been after 12 weeks...a ways into the trimester of 'security'.
