start small... just pay attention to him and be there for him.. he will be gone before you realize it ... take advantage of every opportunity to interact.. you may have to initiate the connections. Understand that he may not know how to talk to you either... He is a dad, not a mind reader.

I'm a dad and a good way (in my humble opinion) would be to have a hobby together. Consider this - tell your dad you are thinking up a hobby and ask him to recommend one? More than likely he would choose something that he enjoys. So then you can ask him for help in getting started.
It's a "win-win" situation. You get to spend quality time with your dad; you can try a new hobby and may enjoy it; and both of you will be happier doing things together.

I'm not as close to my dad as I am to my mom. So I found out things he likes to do and we spend time doing the things he likes. He goes fishing, sometimes I join him. Or we go for a drive. I just try to find things we both can do. I was shy around him to but I got over it. I almost lost him so I try to be around him more.

Why are you shy around your father is the question. You don't give your age but try one small baby step at a time. Ask him how his day was and listen, then ask a question or two then it is your turn to tell him how your day went. Ask him for his advice, help. As time progresses get him involved in something you like, or he likes to do.

What is your dad interested in? What does he like to do?
A shared hobby or interest would be one of the best ways to get closer- and it could be fun!
Consider taking golf lessons, or learning more about the Civil War, or how to make your own beer... do the research on your own, then share it with him.

Maybe you could try getting to do activities you both like, even if some of his choice of activities may be boring, he'll really enjoy having you as company.
