Fear of the thought police!!! Honesty used to be the best policy until every word you say became scrutinized for any hint of offensiveness - in any meaningful discussion there are generally at least two sides so someone is going to find something to be offended by. In truth political correctness creates roadblocks to the dynamic thinking and creative dialog that has served human kind since the beginning. As long as there are people like you asking the question we are not doomed - keep questioning everything it is the only way to achieve wisdom.

People answer things in a politically correct way because they are polite and don't want to hurt people's feelings. I believe that is the whole reason political correctness exists. To me, political correctness demands that one consider that every human being or American or whatever isn't just a white male or whatever the dominant phenotype is. You make your own judgment whether this is good or bad.

The political correct way is the accepted way. But I agree people should be honest, but be tactful. Be open, honest and up-front, but do it with some class, dignity and self-respect. Stick to facts and keep emotions out of it. All too often people argue or debate with their heart alone. You need your mind and your heart working together. Political discussions in my opinion need to be fact based and too many people speak of things they no nothing about. Do your research and respect others opinions and we'll all be much better for it.

Because politically correct way is the right way. And most people think that way too...they are not dishonest just because they speak politically correct.
It is like asking why do people follow the laws and rules....The same reason -- because it is right to do so.
If you don't do the right thing...then there would be chaos...

You are assuming that these two things cannot happen at the same time, and that is wrong. There is nothing wrong with using polite language while expressing strong views. You could say "I object to allowing gay people to marry. I think it is wrong, against nature, and goes against what my church taught me." (I don't happen to agree with this--but it is an example). No doubt from that statement about where you stand, but also no resorting to insulting or offensive language.
Why do some people equate honesty and frankness with offensiveness, abusive language, and insult???

It's simple. People are afraid to offend or to shock other people. But that is people in gen. With your good friends you should have no resolve to hold back. And if you feel you do. Then try replying to them in emails or in computer chat (that is the conversations that need your opinions. But not at that very moment.).That way your miles apart and don't have to immediately see their reaction. Also your typing. That way you can shout it out through this medium but they can't hear how much it means to you. Let them decide how your feeling. Plus it helps to vent some locked up emotions. Try it and see.

Because people are too jelly-spined to tell the truth. It used to be when someone was wrong, you told them and they understood. Now, you dance poetically around the issue and the wrong that they are doing goes unchecked. The person sure feels good about themselves, though.
I truly think blunt honesty is missing from today's conversations. People cannot deal with issues when everyone tells them that it's "ok", or soft-sells it to them. People used to know right from wrong. PC had just left a mushy, weak gray area for people to wallow in.

Try telling the God's honest truth to people for one month. Just do it no matter what you have to say to people, just tell them the brutal truth.
Then you will understand why people put up thousands of fronts (that go way beyond PC speech)

I think that political correctness=sensetivity and courtesy toward all people. Being a Christian, I think the church ought to consider what it means before they condemn others, for Christians are supposed to love and those who love others unconditionally are serving God's purpose.

Its a mix of being tactful and sensitive to the other person's feelings, and no one likes to be singled out as the rude and obnoxious douche bag.
