Goldens do hunt. They watch where the game went down, run to the area, then put their head down to hunt it. Unless they run straight to the game, then they have to hunt. They are judged on how long and how efficient the hunt is. The shorter the better.

Anyway, do you want to hunt for sport or for titles? It is two different things. It is easier to train a companion dog to hunt in the woods with you than it is to train a competition dog. Which ever you choose, go to a trainer or a club that is near where you live. They can evaluate your dog and determine how much training it needs and design a training program for you.

A lot also has to do with how well the dog was bred. A field bred dog will take to it much faster than a backyard bred dog. The dog cannot be gun shy. I agree you need obedience training. A dog that will not come when called is basically useless in the woods. If you field trial you also need a sit and a stay with distractions. Good luck.

Golden Retrievers are not hunting dogs. They are retrieving dogs, meaning that they can be taught to retrieve something that you hunt, (duck, quill, pheasant, etc). If you wanted a hunting dog you should of went with a Bloodhound, Blue Tick Hound, any hound dogs.

The first step is to train them with basic obedience. Once that is achieved you can apply the basics. It is very important that you get a dog from a good breeding stock. Check the dogs lineage to determine if there are any junior or master hunters or field trial champions. Also check to make sure that the animal does not have hip dysplasia. If you cannot train the dog to do basic obedience the odds of having a good hunting dog are slim. The best book to read about training a lab is Water Dog.
