Actually, this has been proven to be wrong. They have a sense of smell, but it is not that developed. However, being as there should be no reason a person should casually man-handle a nest, they can still abandon it.
Humans are predatory animals, and birds know this. If the parents are scared from the nest because of an interfering human hand, it may think the the eggs, or chicks, are a lost cause and may never return.
There is also a theory about washing your hands. It is common knowledge among breeders that the oils and dirt from your hands can suffocate the egg. The egg shell is semi-permeable, and the embryo inside breathes through a pocket just under the egg shell that has it's own air flow to bring clean oxygen to the baby. Parent birds know long before humans do whether or not an egg or chick has high chances of survival, and may abandon the nest for that reason. This is a working hypothesis, but so far has been correct.

This question can have many answers but if you do find an egg put it back in the nest NEVER touch an egg because you think its cool.
Usualy the parent shall take the egg the same goes for a baby bird the parent actualy will take the baby bird and raise it no matter if you touched it BUT dont touch a baby bird because the parent will take it back.We have oils on our hands that could reck the baby birds feathers so if it rains that little baby bird will be very wet and sometimes could die from the cold.

No! It is not true at all.I personally touch all of my birds eggs and she flies back into the nest even after seeing me handling them. How ever i don't recommend doing this unless you are an experienced breeder. One thing I have noticed with my birds is that if you move their nest they will suffer from some stress and most likely will not return. My best advice is to check the eggs during the first 4 days for fertility only after the clutch is complete. Then stay away from them until they hatch. You may look at them the mother wont mind if she trusts you but try not touching them.Do not move the nest, but if you see that the nest is not secure enough you can beef it up some just don't move it.

yes, it depends on the bird, if a bird's egg(s) is touched by human hands, they will not come back to it, becuz they know the nest isnt safe anymore and they cant take a chance to have their eggs hatched and killed at birth

I dont' think it is related to your scent. Some species of birds, if they see you around the nest, are more likely to protect themselves by abandoning the nest to avoid you. Some species are the total opposite.

No it will come back when you leave. If you a child smelled funny would the mother abandon it?

In some species, yes. but if you find an egg on the ground though, don't bother putting it back. its probably infertile or dead and they pushed it out themselves
