My friend was homeschooled all her life, and she told me that you can home school yourself.

The quick answer is yes and no. First, it depends your parents - are they ok with it? Second, it depends on the laws in your state. Third, it depends on your age - if you're 8-10, I'd say, no way. If you're 15 or older, I'd probably say OK.

My older son (11) works pretty independently on some subjects, while I oversee/teach others. Of course, I always check his work, so he's never completely independent.

Yes, there are independent study courses available both on-line and for home use (Switched-On Schoolhouse from Alpha Omega comes to mind). So it is possible to 'teach yourself'.

In theory it could be possible. You'll have to look at your state laws to see what would be required. Some states, such as New Mexico, require a separate location for schooling and home even if you homeschool. Many homeschooled students do, in essence, home school themselves. The parents will order a curriculum from a homeschooling association and then give the child the work. Many parents are not as involved as they should be and the child ends up "teaching themselves." Although I would not recommend self-schooling for the majority of your learning, it is possible.

You would have to check state law but there is curriculum out there that is mainly computer based and requires little of a facilitator. My son does most of the school day by himself and has since 3rd Grade. I'm there for him in case he has a question or problem. He does a program by Alpha Omega called Switched on Schoolhouse. So to your friend, it may have seemed she home schooled herself. But a parent or guardian must file the paperwork with the state.

It would probably not be a good idea. You should look into the American Home school program or something. I was home schooled until the 4th grade because we lived in the ghetto and I missed having friends. High school sucked, but it was over really fast and college was a blast. Hang in there you will be fine.

Absolutely!! I'll bet your friend that was homeschooled her whole life is very gifted and I'll also bet she has alot of original ideals.

Anyone who goes to college is going to carry on the traits and ideals of their teachers which will be just like everybody else's.

Teaching yourself is not profitable, but is original and will cause you to be more intelligent, artistic, and even more so, you'll be more creative.

Sure, you can homeschool yourself! It helps if you're around the high-school age. I'm doing it all myself now

Yes, you can. It's called correspondence courses. The only proviso is that you must be able to read in order to take the courses, so the initial few years, where the reading skills are built, must be supervised by an adult (usually a parent) but once you are past that hurdle you progress at your own speed. I did part of my education by correspondence courses and really enjoyed it. You tend to make progress faster, because you are in a class of one and don't have to wait for others to catch up.

Yes, you can. Your parents may have to fill out the paperwork for the school board, depending on your state laws, but it is possible.

You can use a variety of resources: internet courses, library books, college courses, textbooks, apprenticeships, etc.

Here are a few resources. You may be able to get the books at the library.

Well yes, I did for a semester & the year before I used the exact same curriculum at a christian school. You do everything yourself but you need an adult to oversee & to keep records & things like that. But all in all I did very well for myself and it was challenging but I made it through.
The curriculum is ACE (Accelerated Christian Education)

Not unless you are over 18. Your parent or guardian needs to be the one to fill out the necessary paperwork with the (state) Board of Education.

Good luck
