Smithing, you know, like what god does to infidels.

That sort of stuff.

I wouldn't say anything as it is my nan who used to say this, not me.
And thanks for the correction, I did mean smiting.

I don't agree with you or your nan but that will not stop me from greeting you in the street like I'd lost you. Let me get around to answering your question with a question: do you really think that the Creator of Us all would want us to go around "smithing" each other - does God really want us to destroy what has been so " wonderfully and perfectly made"? I don't think so - and yet that is what we are doing to this world we call home and to each other. If any guns are put to our heads, it is not God's finger on the trigger but our own. I submit to you that the God that I know is not moving in either direction to start or stop this madness; God is the Creator - and that is all God is. No judge, no jury, no executioner; just an Observer of all the sublime and profane ways and means that we as perfect spirits housed in imperfect bodies attempt to return to the One Source. God does not destroy what God creates because God cannot destroy God. Let me repeat : God does not destroy what God creates because God cannot destroy God. This is a subject that takes more than the New York minute that I allow myself... stay tuned!

Seems like we *might* be more happy if there were more metal workers, like blacksmiths, tinsmiths, and silversmiths, but I suspect the word you were looking for is "smiting."
I don't know. Read the early sections of the Hebrew Bible (Genesis through Deuteronomy, especially.) Does this seem like a happier world to you?
On the other hand, perhaps the increased likelihood that God would strike you dead on the spot for your sins would cause people to be mre careful about how they lived their lives. This is probably what your nan was getting at.
However, I disagree, because God's people still flat-out disobeyed him over and over again--even when the fear of smiting sat heavy on their minds! Sin's crazy and self-destructive that way!

even if my nan always said 'oma heeft altijd gelijk' ....i have to disagree with yours, sorry to pay her this disrespect.
i think the world would be a much happier place if we never had known what smithing actually was. punishments should make sense for them to actually have an effect. smithing seems like a punishment without a goal to improve things, or without a sense to improve people.
as a non-native english speaker, i also dunno if 'smithing' is the correct word :)
but i guess a few of the spell-check-nazi's around this website will soon provide us with perfect knowledge.

SMITHING?
Well, I don't know about you, but the Smith's were always a very nice family.
I think Smithing would be OK...as long as all the Smith's are included.

God 'smiting' someone is superstition. Would you say God smited Louisiana's poorer population during Hurricane Katrina? Newsflash....God doesn't smite and the earth and weather is its own entity.
