I am a nurse in a retirement home and even if I'm having a bad day I always try to be cheerful(not gushy cause that scares them). But you have to realize that no matter how bad your life is right at that moment theirs is worse look how they live you are there only hope for some conversation and conversation,or contact with another person. Some of them face death everyday or pain beyond what you have ever felt. They don't fear death they may welcome it .So smile take there hand and listen to their stories you may never hear such things from another person. We all have a story to tell we just need someone to listen.
But if you can't be cheerful or kind quit you job don't go in like a nurse Hatchet from One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.
Take care ,smile cause it will help another.

It is important for you to realize that this person may be miserable if they are ill. You are probably the highlight of thier life! Nurses should be compassionate always, No matter how irratable your patient is. It is your job to take care of them physically and emotionally. Noone realizes just how hard your job is. Without nurses, doctors would probably lose half thier patients!
here are some ways to cope...
Just keep pleasant thoughts when you are with your patient...think of them as a child and try pampering them. Practice your attitude in a mirror. Keep in mind that your shift will end soon and you will not have to look at this person for another 12 hours! (haha). If you really cannot care for this person emotionally, then asked to be reassigned... it will be the best for both of you.

you don't have a choice. No matter what the situation the best thing to do is suck it all in and smile. I mean wouldn't you want at least a happy nurse if you were a patient? Treat as you would like to be treated.
