Usually an ounce, but it means you are measuring by porportion. In other words, 1 part rum to 6 parts Coke means 1 ounce rum to 6 ounces Coke. If you're making a big batch of something you would use maybe 1 cup rum to 6 cups Coke.

One "part" is a proportional measurement. For instance, if I mix 1 part gin with 2 parts sour mix (to make a Tom Collins), it just means that however much gin i put in, I have to use twice as much sour mix. Most of the time, we would use an ounce or a shotglass (typically 1.5 oz.) to equal one "part" when mixing one drink. If I wanted to mix one trashcan full of gin with two trashcans full of sour mix, I'd still end up with the same drink, just much bigger.

one part is simply referring to the proportion of one to another...so if you want to make ONE-cup of a mixed drink and the instructions say, one part liquor A to one part soda B, then you will mix one-half cup of liquor and one-half cup of soda....another example is if you want to mix a TWO-cup drink, and the instructions way mix one part liquor A, 2 parts liquor B, and 3 parts liqour C with 2 parts soda D, then:
1. sum the # of parts, in this case 8 parts
2. divide the # of parts by the the total you want to mix, in this case 2 cups
3. you should come up with one-quarter cup for each part, so every time it says "part" mix a "quarter-cup"
***when i say cup, i mean the actual measure of a cup, not a glass which is the way your very experienced bartender would do it.....hope that was simple enough for you, just remember it's all about proportions
