Historically speaking big wars are fought between privileged rivals... not opposing cultures or between David and Goliaths..so the east/west Islam/Christianity thing does not do it for me.

Probably start with US vs Europe .. a bloody war to resolve the Prime Time Sitcom re- Run Fee crisis.

Actually I think World Wars are sooo last century. Not sure anyone could really be bothered anymore. All that rationing and singing in the shelters. People are too busy Googling.

The Bush family and their cronies have started WW-III (called by them "the war on terror" and by the Pentagon "the long war") in order to control the majority of the world's oil reserves. They are breaking internatiol laws and abuse human rights where ever and when ever it suits them, destroy ancient heritage sites like Babylon (now a base for US Marines) and lie to the people about everything.
They will eventually be found out and pay a high price for it, but the USA will share this payment and might be destroyed in the process.

Many things, however if i had to pick a few-

- A foolish preemptive strike on a nuclear armed country
- economic unstabilty leading to a civil and possibly world war
- severe lack of resources leading to a mad max style reality
- changing environmental factors, sealevels rising to leave less land
- assisinations on major world leaders
-pandemic viruses that spread uncontrollably leaving countries under martial law

Other than that all i cna think of is if aliens invaded, we beat them and then we tear ourselves apart for the spoils of war

I'm certainly no military expert, but I think it's fair to say that religion will no longer play a part in any world war.
And if the West sticks together and ignores these tree hugging anti nuclear mob there should (in theory) be no more world war.
But us peasants can only live in hope!

well, religion has been a big culprit in the past wars of the world, or at least a good excuse to invade and make off with whatever wasnt nailed down. the main things havent changed; greed, fear, pigheadeness, intolerance, ignorance, and when you get these kind of leaders the people have already made it clear that they dont care what they do, at least untill the shortages of suv fuel and starbucks coffee hit.

the gradual re-emergence of Russia, as shown by its opposition to more western orientated leaders popping up in strategically valuable countries such as the Ukraine and other former satellite states. and the power they yield over Europe in terms of gas supplies.
Russia's growing relationship with the future global superpower China, growing cooperation militarily and economically.
China's rise as a superpower to rival europe and the US. Chinese tensions with the US over Taiwan.
Global repositioning of US troops in Central Asia which just happens to be strategicaly important for oil, gas and is on Russia's southern border and very close to China. there's your next cold war.

wars in the future will be fought with technology.the west can already fly unmanned air attacks.and launch unmanned tank assaults.so unless the islamic countries can keep up.they will be getting terrorised by machinery.which you cannot kill.but hey why dont we just leave each to their own.do we really need to be invading countries left right and centre.like the romans and greeks and mongols used to.have we learned nothing in the last 3000 years.
