i have a shepherd as well as 2 other breeds of dogs and think that out of all three she is probably the better of them. she is only 1 yr old but is awesome she listens very well to commands and is always there when you need a friend. and i know that she will protect me if there is ever the need. so i guess you could say that German Shepherds are awesome family pets.

I have had a couple of German Shepherds in the past, and I highly recommend them. They get along well with everyone in the family, and they are very loyal and protective of family members. The only bad thing about these dogs is that they ten to shed a lot. To me this is inconsequential.

I recommend getting a German Shepherd mix (from a shelter!). The advantages:
- You can get a dog that still looks like a German Shep but maybe with short hair if you prefer, and maybe a bit smaller if you prefer.
- You avoid the plethora of genetic problems associated with large purebred dogs (hip dysplasia for example).
- You save a wonderful dog from being abandoned at a shelter - or perhaps euthanized.
Go to http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi
You can search by area and age of the pet (there aer puppies and young dogs!). You will see tons of german shep mixes!

Yes, I love my Dreamer. She is a White one and very intelligent. You just take time and train them well, they pick up on training very fast. I like to use treats for her.
one a scale of 1-5, 5 being the more aggressive (aggressive to those not of their family)
whites - 1
silver and black - 2
tan and black -3
sable and black - 4
dark brown and black to almost all black - 5
Checking the pedigree is very important when thinking of buy/getting a German Shepherd. For some ungodly reason some dumb person decided that if the dogs have a slop to them when they stand (back legs shorter then front) that they look better. THIS IS NOT NATURAL. It is bred in and causes all kinds of problems. One major one is called hip displasia and is very painful and genetic.

Very much. Although they do grow to be rather large, and they shed, but German shepherds are extremely smart animals and can be trained to be very obedient as well. They also are great cuddlers. They do require a fair amount of attention, but if you really are willing to forth the effort, then go for it!
