Chai is the Indian word for tea. The way we make tea in India is by boiling tea leaves or tea bag with some water, sugar, spices(optional) and later on adding milk. Adding spices just adds good flavor to it. You can add a piece of cinnamon or a few cardamoms. Sugar -- a normal person can have from 1/2 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of sugar in 1 cup of tea. Milk depends on how strong do u want ur tea to be. If u want it light..then put more milk ex. for 1 cup of water u can use 1/2 cup of milk.
My recipe: Let the water come to a boil, add a teabag, 1 tsp sugar, spice and let it boil again for a few minutes and then add milk...let the tea boil and then strain it into a cup and its ready. Hope it helps.

The combination of Chai spices can be bought already prepared from a health food or organic store. It is really nice made with soy milk, if you like soy milk. Honey is preferable if you want it sweetened, though by all means use sugar if you wish; maybe a small tspn per cup. You can place the Chai mix (A couple of tspns per cup) in a small saucepan, add the milk and gently heat till hot. Strain the Chai with a tea strainer as you don't really want the spices in the bottom of your cup. Lipton tea also makes an instant Chai teabag though I don't know how good this is.
I would say the spices are necessary for the real deal.

I put half milk and half water in a saucepan with a teaspoon of chai tea leaves per cup (+ one teaspoon for the teapot). Let that heat, and brew til almost boiling, then pour into the teapot. Serve with 1-2 teaspoons of honey per cup - nice and sweet. Here in Australia, I use a special blend of chai tea and spices called Byron Chai which is excellent. Good luck!

4 cups water
4 cups milk
4 green cardamom pods
12 black peppercorns
12 whole cloves
4 inches cinnamon sticks, broke into pieces
1 star anise
1 whole nutmeg
3 slices fresh gingerroot
4 black tea bags
6 tablespoons honey (or to taste)
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Mix together water and milk in large saucepan; bring to a boil.
Add cardamom pods, peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon stick, anise, nutmeg, ginger root, and tea.
Remove from heat and steep for 15-20 minutes, according to how strong you like your tea.
Carefully strain tea through strainer into another pot to remove spices.
Stir in honey, mixing well to dissolve; mix in vanilla extract.
Pour into cups and serve warm, or chill and serve cold.
