The microwave are light waves that can either be absorbed or reflected, (ie. they just pass thru the given material)
I've heard that microwaves are absorbed in both water and fat molecules. Once the microwave is 'absorbed' it's energy is absorbed, it 'excites' the molecule by moving it faster, - and that's what (higher) tempatures are, more excitement / movement of the molecules.

Some types of plastic will melt like plastic bags, but a plastic container won't melt because the microwave machine gives off microwaves and not heat waves. Its a different type of heat and not usually as hot.

I'm assuming you're talking about a plastic bowl or plate.
A microwave "cooks" by causing the water molecules in a substance to accelerate. The friction of these molecules striking each other generates the heat and does the cooking from the inside out.
The molecular structure of the plastic allows the microwaves to pass on through without effect.
If you cook something in a plastic bowl for too long, it too will begin to melt. But your food will be long past the edible stage .

Although naturally plastic would melt when exposed to heat of microwave status, some plastics have been improved to be microvable for that very reason: so that people won't need ceramic or glass to heat in the microwave.

It melts in the microwave because the microwave get really hot and since it heats up food, it will melt things too. You can't put anything metal in the microwave also.

Some plastics will, in time, if the temperature gets high enough. Many plastics ware is constructed to be microwave safe.

Sure it does. You just aren't cooking it long enough. There was a recent scientific study warning of the dangers of eat under cooked plastic form microwaves. So please be careful and make sure that the next time you cook your favorite plastic dish that its cooked thoroughly.
