the rule of thumb is 1 hour more than your dogs age in months.

eg: 2 months + 1 hour = 3 hours in crate.

Dogs should not be crated for longer than eight hours at a time, and quite a bit less for younger dogs. If you're concerned that your dog may be spending too much time in the crate, you can always try testing to see if he can be left free in the house. Try leaving the house for five minutes and go for a walk. If he's fine with that, try it again at ten minutes and so on. Otherwise, you may want to consider a dog day care or day camp for your dog or even having a dog walker come to your house in the middle of the day to give him some attention and exercise.

No more than 4 hours at a time. But not more than 8 hours total in a 24 hour time span.
Even that is pushing it.
A dog should never be crated for 8 hours at a time, like while someone is at work. Then there really isn't a reason for having a dog.

For puppies, add 1 to it's age in months for how many hours. For example a 12 week old puppy can only hold it's bladder for 4 hours. For adults, I would not leave a dog alone, in or out of a crate for more than 10 hours. Not only do they need to eliminate, dogs also need food, exercise and love.

I have a jack russell terrier and I crate him (or he chews things up) every day when I'm at work for about 10 hrs a day. He is very healthy and I've been doing it for about 2 yrs, all I have to say to him is go home and he goes in, he likes it I think. He has his water dish attached on side and he has his toys.

Depends on how long the flight, but they get just as cranky as people. They might even be given a sedative to keep they quiet for the duration.
