one word - OUTSOURCING. Most companies now employ people/firms in India to take their customer service calls & the phone people are taught only rudimentary phrases in English. It's the wave of the future because it's SO cheap to do . . .

Bloody cheapskates, they won't even pay for proper English speakers. Nearly all the calls I get on my mobile are Asians with thick accents trying to sell me mobile phone subscriptions. But the good news is that companies who use Indian call centres for their customer services are having a big problem with irate British customers and turning back to British call centre staff. Unfortunately the cold callers are bound to continue, if they switch from the Asian call centres you'll only get the same calls from proper English speakers which will only be marginally less irritating.

Outsourcing. IT's cheaper to employ 200'000 Indians who can barely speak a word of English than it is to employ 200'000 English who might stand a chance of communicating effectively with us.
I believe it is known as corporate greed.

because these days its cheaper for major companies to move their call centres to India.where the average wage they pay is about £100 per month.instead off £1000 .so if they employ 50 people they save £45000 per month.unfortunately most of them cannot speak English and it is usually a crap line also.do what i do.say sorry the owner is out and hang up.no need to be nasty to them.its not their fault.they are only trying to make an honest living.

One Sunday morning i continuously got calls to my mobile at 6.50 in the morning from an Indian call centre. I turned the volume down, then checked later and had been called 15 times, all before 8am on a sunday morning. I know they have a job to do, but it's getting ridiculous now.

Money. It is cheaper to pay someone in India to run a call center than here in the states. Outsourcing it is called.

Because it costs the companies concerned a fraction of what it would cost to run the callcentre from either the UK or U.S
A number of companies are considering switching back again though because of customer backlash.
