I have taught preschool for over 12 years and potty trained many children. Girls are easier. Boys take a little more time.
You first have to wait until your child takes an interest in the bathroom. Does he know when he is going? Boys usually train around 3. Don't' use rewards! They only come to be expected even after your child is trained and can become a nuisance to you.
I prefer the child sitting down. It's much easier and MUCH more sanitary. You won't have to worry about cleaning the toilet daily.
If you think he is ready, get him some "big boy" underwear and put him into clothing that he can get on and off without help (work on this first if he cannot do it yet). Get him a step stool so he can get onto the toilet. Children prefer using things that are real. When you see him doing the "potty dance" give him a gentle reminder "It looks like you need to use the bathroom." Give it no more attention than that. If he soils himself say "It looks like you need to change." Let him change without any help. He can take off the wet clothing, wash it, put them in the laundry, clean any messy area, and put on clean clothing (take a bath before bed). He will soon learn it is much easier to use the bathroom. Good luck!

I have two boys ages 3 and 2. My 3 yr. old is completely potty trained and we are working on the little one. We started by making them interested in it (giving rewards, kids potty books, etc) Putting them on the tiolet rather than standing is much easier when they are first getting used to it. What we did was put them backwards on the potty, this forces their pelvis to point downward so they are sure not to miss. Also our babysitter was awesome about keeping their training as a routine. About every 30mins or so take them to the potty and show them what to do. If they go give them a sticker or some type of reward, if they don't just tell them that it is OK and to let you know when they are ready. But stick to a routine, do the same all the time so they don't get confused. Good luck!!

Around 2 1/2 onwards is usual and the golden rule is to ignore most advice you hear! Every child is different and will find their own way. Our boy got on best with a child seat placed on the toilet. This not only means you don't have mucky potty's but they are using the same room as mummy and daddy so they feel grown up.
Take your time, don't get frustrated with eachother, expect accidents, give him loads of praise (treat) when he gets it right, don't try too many ways of training at once - give it time.
Whatever you do - dont buy a book! These will only present other peoples opinions and make you feel like your doing it all wrong.

Would you have him standing up by the toilet or sitting on a potty?

Around age two, when they have both the ability to communicate the need to go and the understanding of ' feeling wet'. Always start any child sitting on the potty. Remember to reward good behavior! We did great with both children, one of each, with Jelly beans and M&M's as a reward. Even when your out they fit in your pocket easy. Boys shouldn't stand at the commode untill they can position them selfs well above the rim and seat. Other wise your risk then injuring themselfs if or when that seat comes crashing down.
