Before eating say "itadaikimasu" and after eating, say "gochisosama deshita".
When I was in Japan, the hospitality of the Japanese are very warm.
Even when you just enter the restaurant and they welcome you with "irasshaimase!"

most traditional Japanese restaurants have you remove your shoes before going into the dining area. If you do not use or want to use chop sticks they will give you a fork. Never cross your chopsticks and leave them on your plate it is very bad luck and very insulting to the host.

Well, let's see, you remove your socks and shoes so you can expose your crusty man feet along with all the other diners' feet that are covered on foot fungi and then you sit down so you are even closer to the putrid stench of a lot of feet and you eat. It's kind of gross, but I sure do like shrimp sauce.
