You can't fly with a better airline than Singapore Airlines, the tickets are good value, the service & food are excellent. The planes are clean & comfortable & the stewards make you feel the most important person in the world.
You can choose either Singaporian style meals or English, I recommend the Singaporian food as it's delicious.
Plus you can always stopover in Singapore which believe me is well worth a visit specially if you fancy a new ipod etc

Try Emirates but book well in advance, Malaysian are also cheap at the moment with London - Perth at under 550.00 GBP.

The Asian Airlines are normally cheaper than the European Carriers, however you may want to look at United airlines Via San Francisco and Honolulu as well, if you have the time not bad places to stop of at.

Trailfinders, STA are the best for the cheap seats, Avoid Last minute as they are about 20% More Expensive. however if you can pick your seats then make sure that you are not near the Galley or Toliet as you shall get very little sleep.

For NZ, Air New Zealand are reasonable, again if you book in advance, dont forget though that October is coming into the Summer seasons and prices will be higher.

Good Luck

Try the asian airlines like SIngapore Airlines, Japan airlines and Emirates. Not only are they cheaper but their service completely surpasses BA and quantas. Best airline I ever flew with was Japan airlines by far - economy class feels like business calss!

Try flying with an airline that's based somewhere else you'd like to visit. (ie if you want to go to Thailand try Thai Airways) They will often give you a stopover for nominal cost - or free !

I've done this repeatedly with stopovers of up to 1 year, and have never paid a significant amount for the 'extra' holiday.

Qantas may have a good safety record but they are SHITE! No leg room, far too hot, don't even come round and offer you water and it's neeeeded on a flight that long!

The best flight to NZ I ever had was on Air Malaysia - it was brilliant. I also flew Air Canada once (via Toronto instead of the Middle East) and that was pretty good also.

My parents have flown Air Singapore and said it was fantastic, as was a flight on Japan Air with an overnight stop in Tokyo (really sorted the jet-lag, apparently).

Get onto trailfinders, sta travel and the flight centre, and see who can get you the best deal for the date you want to go, then contact that airline direct and see if they'll do it any cheaper.

I flew to Thailand via Kuwait with Kuwait air, it was really cushty and really cheap.

Try Singapore Airlines. Or go with a travel agent like STA (Its for students but if you not one they can still hook you up with a sweet deal). If your willing to rough it try Vietnam Airlines or China Southern.
