By all means stay at St James Court in London. It is near Buckingham Palace, Parliment Square, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliment, and the Thames Embankment. If you have time, go all the way to John O' Groats in Scotland to Landsend on the Cornish Coast. If you are not driving a car, Frames Travel has an excellent tour. Every inch of England is interesting.

I highly recommend heading to the south coast and across to the Isle of WIght. The island has a little of everything - sandy beaches, rocky beaches, cliffs, downs, thatched cottage villages, castles, historic houses, yachting, horseriding, quaint pubs, nightlife, zoos, museums, theme parks, etc. etc. It's beautiful and easy to get around. Here's a site to check out:

I was born and raised on the Isle of Wight where my parents had a hotel. Now I live in the US (the desert southwest) and I miss everything about the beautiful countryside.

the north east is lovely and not nearly as touristy as other parts of the country. south tyneside is a fun and interesting area. newcastle/gateshead has lots to do and is only a short distance from the coast.
