First teach him "HOLD it" do this by putting the stick in his mouth and holding his mouth closed around it. then say "GOOD HOLD IT!" give him a treat. do not go on to step 2 until the dogs can do step one 100% of the time on his own with out you holding his mouth shut.

then teach him "get it" throw stick run with dog to stick tell dog "good get it!" then give command "hold it". give treat.

then teach bring it throw stick wait for dog to pick it up and hold it then say bring it and call the dog. when dog comes with stick say good bring it. and treat.

You need to train you, spend time reading books, learning what your doing with your dog is the best way to train them. Yelling will not work. If possible take a course. Pet Smart offers them all the time and I am sure you can fine courses listed in the paper.

PetSmart is an awesome resource with their classes and experts.

My dog just sorta picked it up. (My cat, too) She doesn't fetch sticks, but she's got this stuffed bone that squeaks and she'll pick it up and bring it to me. Then she goes and gets it after I toss it to the other side of the room. I started rewarding her when we noticed this habit to reinforce it.
