RISPERDAL® (risperidone) is a prescription anti-pshychotic medication that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of bipolar I disorder or to treat acute to manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar disorder. It is approved for use as therapy alone or in combination with drugs called mood stabilizers, such as lithium or valproate. Exactly how RISPERDAL works is unknown. However, it seems to readjust the balance of dopamine and serotonin in the brain.

I don't know why people says it messes them up, because when I have a manic episode, this is one of the first drugs the doctor puts me on at the onset and it helps me. For me (and my family that have to deal with me) it is literally a lifesaver.

Risperdal is classified as an atypical anti-psychotic. The "anti-psychotic" part means that the drug helps to reduce psychosis (i.e. delusions and hallucinations.) It also has a calming effect which is why it is also prescribed for people with Bipolar Disorder (otherwise known as manic depression).
The "atypical" part means that it is different from the old anti-psychotics (like Haldol and Thorazine). This is a good thing because the side effects are far less dangerous and less likely to reduce your ability to function.
However, the drug affects everyone differently. That is why it is important to be open and honest with your physician and to discuss your medications and side effects with him/her regularly (even if you feel stable).

Risperdal is an anti-psychotic that has some side effects that are not pleasurable, but it also saved my life as it completely stopped the voices I was hearing.

Risperdal is an antipsychotic drug I think. I have a son who takes it and helps him control alot really bad behavior. I understand from him it does make you feel wierd, but he's beginning to recognize that it does help him. He also takes depakote and clonodine.
