Because people have this thing that they think that someone who holds that much power and could be that great can only be white. It's not your fault its society. I betcha if someone says think of a doctor. The first image will be a white man. Not thinking that a black man or a Indian or any other race could be one too. Try this on some of you friends. Call out some high up professions and ask them when they pictured them what race were they. They are going to say white. But if you read your bible. It says that Jesus was made up of many colors.

Yeshua was not a white man!!! He was middle eastern with dark skin and SHORT not long hair. For a Jew to have long hair in those days was considered a disgrace. He was also a big guy. Not the effeminate looking white dude catholic iconography depicts Him as. In those days, the tools of carpentry required someone well built to operate, Yeshua used to build houses so He was quite strong, and would need to be to endure what He went through, on our behalf on the cross. Dont forget He had 3 quaters of his skin literally ripped from His body during the scourging process- also, the previous night He was subjected to beatings by the temple thugs- then they beat Him with sticks and forced a crown of thorns on His head which pierced His scalp. Whilst this was going on He was subjected more beatings and taunts.
With the beatings, having His skin ripped away from his body, and with the resultant blood loss, weakened and racked with incredible pain, He still carried His cross for three quarters of a mile!! Then He was nailed to the cross with nine inch nails- but even through all of this pain, imagine the pain of the skin ripped away from you, then the loss of blood making you weak and thirsty, not to mention the beatings all night long, the having nails put in your hands and feet would you have the presance of mind and just sheer grace to say "Father forgive them, they know not what they do."? Does that sound like a weak, long haired effeiminate hippy? Jesus, even if He was just a man, I would follow Him!! He was not, however white, so get over it.
By the way- im a white dude.

Because he probably was. There is no reason for God to be white. People always assume that, but nothing in the bible says so. But when Jesus lived, he was just a son of Mary, married to Josef, a carpenter from Bethlehem. I guess there were more white people there. Or do you think Mary was black?

Hi,

Most pictures of Jesus that i see are white. I even have a children's bible that has pictures of Jesus as a blond, which i think unlikely. But I have seen pictures of Jesus in many different colors. Jesus was probably brownish, but he could have had red hair. Some Jews did, I think. Here's some sites that have Jesus in the color of the people who love him.

jesus had a colored hair and eyes, but God is spirit and we are spirit like him. we're more alike than different. the cool thing is that God loves us just the way we are. Besides, God likes colors he made the whole world and all the people in color and its beautiful and amazing

A few academics question Jesus' existence in history but most don't. Of course, lots of people have different ideas about what really happened in his life and what it means.

Jesus is not always depicted as white in artwork. Most of the famous depictions of Jesus were created in Italy, therefore were created by white artists. Those artists painted and sculpted the figure of Christ to resemble themselves. Even the clothing of many people in the artwork was not accurate to biblical times, but to reinnasance.
The artists took many liberties with their art, even placing characters together who could not possibly have met.
In modern times there have been many different depictions of Jesus. Jesus is no longer always depicted as white in art.

Because the people in Rome who collected together all the books of the bible were probably all white, and then it was a largely European religion for a long time, so they just drew pictures that people could relate to. I'd prefer it if people started drawing him as Middle Eastern, so it would look more accurate with the clothes he wore, cos people didn't really wear that in like, England.

Jesus was a Jew. He is white because he was a man, not son of god. If he was really son of god then, why didn't he inspire muslims, jews, buddhists, hindus, romans, greeks, egyptians and numerous other religions to follow "christainity". Ironinc how christ and christianity are spelled... He was nothing more than a mere man. True, he inspired many people to live better lives and he did walk on Earth and he changed the way people think about each other today but it is wrong to consider him as "son of god." he was nothing more of a man than we are, he was just great. But I guess I can't blame people, it was after all Constantine who is to be blamed...

Most religious art was created by Europeans from the Medieval period through the the renaisance. The moors were the dominant force in the middle east during this period. A black Christ would not have been acceptable to the European sponsors of these artworks.

He isn't, just in the pictures that are from a few decades ago when black people weren't as accepted in western places. Nowadays most pictures of Jesus are not white.
