Why is it that we can be perfectly cordial and pleasant to our work colleagues and work aquaintances during the day but if we meet them in the street outside of work we would rather cross the street than have to acknowledge their existence?

Because they are out of context and we don't know how to handle them in another arena. You don't want to change the nature of your relationship with them, it might interfere in some way with your working relationship. It's an instinctive thing.
I think that most of the people I worked with came from a different planet. Don't you think that the people you work with are a bit odd? It's like the people you see in hotels and airports, they are also a bit odd. Come to think of it railway stations and--------.

The same reason I don't go to company Christmas parties... I have to be cordial at work. It's part of the gig. I'd rather spend my free time with family & friends. But if I run into a co-worker at the store, we exchange plesantries & move on. Calling your co-workers names doesn't sound like you tolerate them, even at work. Perhaps you should find green pastures.

i would nt cross the road to ignore my work colleagues , however at work " DO's " the conversion always ends up back to what we did at work during the week etc... i think people find it hard to socialise with work colleagues as you like to keep your private and work life separate . i mean do you tell your colleagues everything in your personal life . i wouldn't want too !!!!!

i always say hi to someone if i know them - whether or not i work with them.

i see some of my work mates in their house and one of them is taking me out to practice my driving

some of the guys play golf together at the weekends

fair and well there are some workmates that i would rather not see outside of work - but its the same as neighbours - you should still be polite and say hello

I believe it's best to keep work and your personal life separate, But then again, I've met lifelong friends at work.Sometimes you work with people you don't like, and sometimes you get lucky. Either way...Got to pay the bills... Right?

Depends who they are. Some people I would run a mile to get away from outside of work, (***** bosses etc!) whereas others are really nice people and I don't mind chatting to them.

It seems the opposite is true for me. I seldom run into my coworkers outside the office and when I do, it ends up at least a ten minute conversation.

maybe we just would rather not to talk to them, or maybe we wouldnt like to talk to them cos you have your hands full with a baby, or shopping, or maybe you are wearing a horrible top and rather that your work colleague not see you in it! lol!
