Algebraic expressions allow you to form equations using symbols (Capital and lower case letters) that show relationships. For example, the amount of fruit on hand could be shown by an equation as :

F = A + O + B (Fruit = Apples + Oranges + Bananas).

If they always deliver twice as many apples as bananas, you can also make an equation such as:

A = 2B

These are very simple examples and algebraic expressions can be formed to solve very complicated relationships. Since Math is a universal language, using algebraic expressions rather than words prevents errors in translation. Engineers often "make-your-own" equations or use equations that have existed for many years such as V = IR (Ohm's Law).

An algebraic expression is a mathematical expression with a variable.

It does not have an equals sign.

For example,

2x + 3

An expression is a combination of numbers, operators, grouping symbols (such as brackets and parentheses) and/or free variables and bound variables arranged in a meaningful way which can be evaluated. Bound variables are assigned values within the expression (they are for internal use) while free variables can take on values from outside the expression.

Using a symbol such as a letter within an equation to find an unknown quantity. Eg (a very simple example) if I need to know how many CDs I own and I know that I have 6 boxes full and each box can hold 20 CDs I can replace my unknown quantity (no of CDs) with the symbol 'y' and calculate it as such:

y = 20 x 6
answer 120

It's usually used for complex calculations, using simultaneous equations,especially when there is more than one unknown quantity.

An expression containing numbers and variables (eg, 7x), and operations that involve numbers and variables (eg, 2x + y or 3a - 4). Algebraic expressions do not contain equality or inequality symbols.
