According to Hindu mithology it is the day of killing the demon "narakasura" by the wife of the God Lord SriKrishna.To commemorate that day festival "Diwali"(it is also called "deepavali") is celebrated. The meaning of the festival is that "Dharma"(good) always wins over "adharma"(bad or evil force").The devotees of the God always be taken care of by Him.

Not only this festival, there is particular and specific meaning in
celebration of all hindu festivals.

It's a solistice festival (hope I spelt that correct).

It is believed that Lord Rama defeated the Evil King Ravana and returned home that day. People celebrated that night with lamps to signify the good winning over evil.

well, it has got mythological significance, it marks the return of lord Rama to Ayodhya(India), his kingdom after killing Demon king Ravana (king of Lanka .. now known as Sri Lanka). And to welcome him every household were decorated with candles(diya in Hindi). So we celebrate Diwali(festival if diyas) till date. it's our tradition.
