All mosque I have attended welcomed visitors. But out of respect you should at least wear long and loose firring pants or a skirt. A long sleeve shirt would be best, but they know your not Muslim and will not expect you to. If you really want to be respectful you could maybe wear like a bandanna or something that at least partially covers your hair. Like I said they know your not Muslim and don't observe the hijab(head scarf, covering).

And as for what custom you should follow. Well Islam is a religion and does not go by costom(well some people do, but they should not). One thing that they will ask you to do is to take off your shoes. We put our face to the floor when we pray and keep the floor clean. And just be respectful, they will know you don't know and if you do something that is not so good, they will kindly tell you.

Hope that helps.

All non-muslims can enter mosques except for masjidil-haram (kaabah). Women must cover her legs, wear long sleeves, and a piece of cloth to cover her hair. I advice you to wear loose clothings and don't wear transparent or semi transparent. Also, don't wear shoes inside the mosque. If you can, ask a muslim friend as a guide and to explain your presence to muslims who is inside the mosque.

Yes, you must cover your legs (wear pants or a long skirt) cover your head (wear a hat, or head scarf) you don't need to worry about your arms. The people at the mosque will probably be eager to show you around and explain things and guide you.

Hope I helped.

According to my knowledge it is not appropriate to visit mosque's by females. Even visiting mosque or grave yard by Muslim females is not appropriate. I guess the reason for that is Islam does not favour the mixing between females and males naturally since it may lead to consequences which Islam does not desire. But eventually if you want to visit a mosque for a research or documentary, I guess you can visit with appropriate permission from the mosque trustee board. If you tell your need, they will arrange it for you and wil guide and tell you necessary steps. Thanks.
