Anxiety disorders are very common today. Your son has been through an extremely stressfull event and may even be suffering from a light post traumatic type stress situation. He is literally battling for his life. His youth and his focus on this is causing depression, the depression causign anxiety. Think of the attacks like a volcano errupting. When the worry and fear reach a point they errupt.

Anti-deppresents might help. Therapy may well help. A sense of purpose and getting religion I think will help more. First off even if you do not believe in any religion there are proven benifits to positive thinking in recovering from major illnesses. Then there is the chance of Divine involvement if he is. He is having ot deal with issues of mortality with an in your face before your ready kind of view. That isn't easy for anybody. Making his peace would allow him to get up and go on with life and make the most of it now. Hopefully it turns out he's beaten it completely but until he does right now he feels like he's in limbo. That limbo is your worst enemy. It is stress which reduces his ability to fight off disease. It is fuel for depression and it's torture for the soul.

A man who's made his peace with his mortality can continue on with confidence and hope for the best but at least feel prepared for the worst as well. That ability to get up and go after the world is a good thing. His moments might be precious now, but if he continues to cycle into depression it is like he is throwing them away. It is also making his recovery harder and making a situation for the famiily which is hard enough already even worse.

So religion and an intense hobby/purpose will be balms to his worry and fear with the power no drug can touch. These two things can give him the strength to fight this off and a reason to do so.

Speaking as someone who has had panic attacks for 11 years and i am 21 myself,

Panic attacks usually are usually caused by depression, stress but certian foods play a role in panic attacks, it would be good if he limited his sugar intake, and caffene intake as they will often cause them to. but he does need to see a couselor because i think that maybe the leukemia might be the cause of this, i am no doctor but people often shut down in weird ways, i started out just like that minus the cancer, but i lost my father got really depressed and started having very bad anxiety attacks when i was 18 i shut down wouldnt leave the house every time i did i would have a panic attack, i got help and got on medication and am doing much much better now, the medication will eleminate alot of anxiety but it doesnt get rid of it 100%!

some of the older line antidepressants are very cheap such as imiprimine. Could you call the Cancer Society and ask what help they have? Maybe with some counseling...and an antidepressant he will get better.

Yes, antidepressants halt anxiety/panic attacks too. They are better than the calming drugs as they are not addictive. Talk to your GP and don't wait.

i think you may be asking if he is suffering from panic attacks. depression can lead to them and panic attacks can lead to depression. panic attacks make your heart beat very fast, you feel very out of control, you feel like you want to crawl out of you skin, you feel very edgy, you can't be around people when you are having one, you can't breath, you feel scared, the list can go on and on. try to tell him that if he can be in remission he can overcome anything. but take him to the Dr. he will more than likely need and panic med or an anti depressant . good luck with everything.

It sounds as though your son could use some professional counseling with someone who deals with mental health issues. The doctor can discuss medications that can help alleviate your son's symptoms. That combined with talk therapy to help your son deal with the issues surrounding his illness, could help.

Is he not going to a social worker or counsellor? It just seems as though it would be mandatory for him to get counselling. A tip is that if they want to put him on xanix, be careful. My doctors will only give it to me if I can not stand my symptoms. My neighbour's husband died when attempting to stop his addiction to xanix. Get him help. Ask his doctors to recommend somebody to help him. God worked one miracle on him, he will do more if you only keep your faith.
