For getting the actual number correct, no strategy is better than any other strategy. The numbers are all completely random, so putting your favorite numbers, putting 11 12 13 14 15 16, and using quick pick will give you the same chance to win.

However, if you pick a number that has already been picked, then you have to split the prize. Picking your own number makes it more likely that you will pick the same number as someone else, which is why quick pick is generally a better strategy if you do choose to play lotto.

disclaimer: i've never won the lottery.

but it seems that a good strategy is to partner up with 8-10 people and pool your money collectively to buy tickets. Say, $10/per person each week. So,

10 people x $10 = 100.00/week

So now you're spending 100.00/week on tickets, instead of the $5-10 you usually put in alone -- thus increasing your chances. If anyone in the group wins, you split it 10 ways. (Obviously, the more money and people you add, the better your chances.)
