i have a friend who's broken up with his girlfriend - he's pretty low and i'd love to cheer him up. What are the best ways you've used - either for yourself or for a friend?

Sometimes you just have to listen. Let them say EVERYTHING that's on their mind. You don't have to tell them what to do. Just let them know that you are there for them.
Next, do things together that he enjoys. It will get his mind off of it, even if it's for a little while. He will appreciate your friendship.
If he needs a little advice getting over her, tell him
1) why she doesn't deserve him,
2) remind him why it wouldn't work out,
3) keep telling him the right one is out there, still looking for him,
4) have him ask himself, 'do i really wanna be with someone that doesn't wanna be with me?'
5) sometimes people are in our lives for a short while, either to learn something from us or for us to teach them something. then they are just gone
6) forgetting them completely is impossible. treasure the good memories and learn from the bad ones.

Spend time with them and taken them places to hang out and get their mind off things. Like to a water park or something.

Take him out for a few beers and catch a world cup game. For God's sake don't get drunk and sleep with him

sit with him all day just to have someone there if he starts talkin bout her give him hugs and tell him shes missin out cuz hes the best and anyone would wanna be with him! or just sit up all night watchin funny movies to get her off his mind! i hope i helped! :]]
