But there are way too many different theories about what this really translates to that I'm not sure how you are going to determine who is "right".

First we should understand that the statement was made several hundreds years ago. This statement has it own background or better the person or group had such background. This is true for the spiritual concepts or explanations in general.
In the course of humanity there were several methods that tried to explain who human being in reality is. Some were better, some worse.
The statement that 666 is the number of the Beast and the man, comes from one of the classic school of the time.

This method of explaining what man and world is all about divides human being in 3 so called bodies. The first one is physical body. The second is so called astral or emotional body. The third is so called causal or mental body. Each of them represents one of the numbers 6 in number 666. Or the way around, 6 represent one of these bodies.

It is said that the causal body is more spiritual advanced, that it is made from a finer matter - emanation. All the regions/bodies are under control of the MIND. Here we should not think about the mind we are using in day-to-day activities. The mind we are using for day-to-day activities is just a small particle of this bigger mind.

These 3 worlds that are ruled by MIND are also called as world of time and space, world of duality, etc.... On the base of the same concept behind this world resides creator himself as only ONE.
Each of this bodies, regions, ... have the ruler. According on this concept there are 6 rulers in each of this regions that are represented by each number 6. Always it is said that each rulers is ruling the lower part of the creation that is a kind of reflection of the upper part. Each of these rulers believes that he is the God and that there is nothing behind him (not even GOD). He, so to say, claims that he is god. The same happen to the person that is experiencing such reality in his body, as this is just the copy of the outer (us it is up so it is below) one.
We use to believe that we are the body, filings, mind where in fact we are not. Because of its nature mind is called also SATAN (SAT = true and AN = NOT), beast, etc....
The mind of day to day activities is not able to perceive the reality of upper worlds this is why you need tome, so to say, special states of the mind (but still the mind). Not even the MIND is able to comprehend GOD himself, as it is not able to perceive out of time and space, out of duality.
