This is a doozy, from a science point of view it is a release of endorphines when you think, see, smell, hear or feel a certain thing. Religously true happiness will come when you ascend into heaven or reach enlightenment or whatever the equivalent is. The obvious and probably best answer is to live a good life with those who you love and who love you back. Happiness is what you truly want from life but, and it is a big but, you need to have someone you love to share it with. Try and remember the times something great happened - the first person you ring or tell or want to tell is your greatest love and without that the achivement is devalued greatly and you feel disappointed so it is the person not the achievement creating happiness. to go back for some it is drugs others religion others goals but the common factor is that they want to share it with those they love. remeber how you felt when the person you love did not share your enthusiasm.

I would have to say that the truest meaning of happiness is to live each and every day being content (satisfied) with what you have and the blessings that God has giving to you. Do not dwell on the bad things in life but rather be joyful and full of gladness. Count it all joy when trials and tribulations come your way. There is a Rock that you can build your house on so that when these trials and tribulations come they will not crash your house but rather your house will stand for the whole world to see.

Real Happiness and Inner Peace
Real happiness and peace can be ONLY found in submitting to the commands of the Creator and the Sustainer of this world. God has said in the Qur’an: (Truly, in remembering God do hearts find rest.)
(Qur’an, 13:28)
On the other hand, the one who turns away from the Qur’an will have a life of hardship in this world. God has said:
(But whoever turns away from the Qur’an, he will have a hard life, and We will raise him up blind on the Day of Judgment.) (Qur’an, 20:124)
This may explain why some people commit suicide while they enjoy the material comfort money can buy. For example, look at Cat Stevens (now Yusuf Islam), formerly a famous pop singer who used to earn sometimes more than $150,000 a night. After he converted to Islam, he found true happiness and peace, which he had not found in material success.

I have just looked on the web and found a hypnosis site saying that it means "pleasant and uplifting thoughts". I think that is superficial, and upsifting thoughts are a mask for bad feelings which will come out somehow. I think happiness is being content to be yourself, with a lot of self worth, which is not reliant on other people.

on word comes to my mind through a maze of a thousand words to explain happiness and it is "LOVE" because love is thought-provoking, yet without thought. Love is having everything and knowing nothing, yet it is knowing everything and having nothing too. Love is the closeness of togetherness, and love is the solitude of isolation.
Love is inspiration, intuition, joy. Yet it is also heartbreak and loneliness and solitude. Love is the trembling excitation of newness, and the shaking of the grief of loss. Love is a slow and steady pace, yet too, it is the exuberance that makes us want to run and dance and sing. Love is ecstasy and misery, sureness and confusion. Love makes us feel as if we could do anything, yet love also makes us feel like nothing at all at times. Love is being light-headed and dizzy, yet love is feeling heavy and as if about to die. Love is the slow and steady heart, yet the flutter of its racing too. It is freedom, yet it can also be the bars of a prison found deep within, can it not?

The true happiness doesn't have the reason. That's why children are the only ones who are capable of being trully happy.
