I recommend a clarifying shampoo. Usually, oil is caused by product build-up. If you think this is what's causing your hair to get oily, try using a clarifying shampoo once a week. If you hair is just naturally oily, you can use it every day, but try to use it only on your roots. As you rinse, the suds will go through the rest of your hair. Make sure you follow up with a rich conditioner, and keep it away from your roots. Pantene makes a really good clarifying shampoo which I use. Aveda has an excellent one, but it's quite expensive.

I have oily roots and have to wash it every day. I have found using gentle shampoos helps. I try to avoid shampoos with ammonium lauryl sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate. These ingredients are harsh, and can strip your all of all oils. When this happens, your scalp will produce even more oils to replace them. I use a shampoo with sodium laureth sulfate (which isn't nearly as harsh as the other two), or if I can afford it I use a natural shampoo. You can find natural shampoos in a natural/health food store or online at places like http://www.drugstore.com/. Burt's Bees Super Shiny shampoo and conditioner are both great for oily hair, and won't weight it down.
Also, avoid opaque shampoos, because they contain a lot of moisturizers that will eventually build up on your hair and make it greasy. And don't use conditioner on your scalp or roots, as this will also make your hair greasy.

A lemon rinse is good for oily hair. Use a shampoo (quality) that is made just for oily hair but DO NOT USE a conditioner. To detangle, you can use one of those spray and leave-on conditioner. It's like spritzing the ends of your hair just to get the tangles out. Like I said before, lemon and water mixture is good for oily hair and when you're out in the sun it even helps to put highlights in your hair.

Use a shampoo for oily hair. And don't use conditioners as much as possible, so that it will not look too limp and oily.

My hair is oily too. I use 'clear' shampoos which I've found suit my hair better - the 'creamy' ones tend to leave it feeling heavy and coated. At the moment I'm using Herbal Essences which leaves a nice smell and makes it shine. I also wash it every day.

Change the shampoo you use often. My hair is oily & I use a different shampoo every week. Don't toss out the unused portion, save it for a different week.
