Nikola Tesla created a device that when powered up ran an electric car to speeds of up to 90MPH. In 1931! No one really knows what powered the device and Tesla didn't tell anyone. Bummer.

I think that the reason we can't figure it out is because it is totally obvious, and everyone is looking for a less immediate and very complicated technology. I would imagine it is actually a very simple design.

But an even easier solution would be to try and find the box. Surely he would not have destroyed it!

I am guessing simple inductance. If you have enough loops of wire the you can up the voltage. Basic. The amps would be harder to come by, but if you have a generator I think you could make the energy during those times.

Tesla was a fan of capacitance..
copper coil capacitors cooled by borax (soap) and (water) h20
possibly the best reactor ever made.

you're right about that. the government confiscated it and all tesla's papers and wont say anything about it exept that it really didn't work... shades of X-Files.
